About thirty percent of the home fires that happen in Türkiye every year start with an electrical installation fault. Most of these fires begin with problems in or around the fuse box. So why do fuse-box fires happen, and how can they be prevented?

The most common danger in a fuse box is a loose connection. Terminal screws loosen over time and resistance rises at the contact point. Rising resistance produces heat, and heat melts the cable insulation. This silent process goes unnoticed and one day it can turn into flames. Have an electrician check your fuse box at least once a year.

Overloading is another critical cause. Every fuse protects up to a certain amperage. Running high-power appliances such as an air conditioner, a washing machine and an electric heater from a single line at the same time makes the fuse trip constantly or, worse, overheat. Spreading your home's electrical load evenly across the lines is a basic safety rule.

Old porcelain and bakelite fuses cannot meet today's power needs. They do not give enough protection and they also make arcing more likely. They must be replaced with modern miniature circuit breakers (MCBs) and residual-current devices (RCDs).

Here is what you can do: Have a professional electrician check your fuse box once a year. Replace old-style fuses with circuit breakers. Make sure every line uses a breaker with the right amperage. Keep the area around the fuse box clear of flammable materials. If your fuses trip often, do not ignore it; always consult a specialist.

Remember: your fuse box is the heart of your home. Regular maintenance and the right equipment protect your family and your home from the risk of fire.
